PARALLEL

With the project PARALLEL, I do not want to simply repeat the familiar critique that objects in museums are often presented as belonging to the past, even though they continue to hold meaning within living communities today. The object itself does not change — but our way of looking at it does, and it is precisely this gaze that determines meaning.

For this reason, PARALLEL traces the shifting position of the object across three stages, or three moments: from museum or depot, to domestic decoration - often stripped of context - and ultimately back to use and origin. In doing so, I want to make it visible that conservation not only preserves and objectifies objects, but also shapes the image and perception of the communities to which they are connected.
